Mijn achtergrond is productontwerp, maar producten zijn eerder mijn aanleiding dan mijn eindproduct. Het fascineert me dat we (de mens) ons de materialen van de aarde toe-eigenen maar tegelijk door industrialisering en globalisering steeds meer vervreemden van producten.

De vormgever heeft sinds de industrialisatie zijn eigen hokje: hij geeft onze spullen hun vorm. Daar­voor was vormgeving onderdeel van het werk van de ambachtsman, die tegelijkertijd techneut en ontwerper was.

Tegenwoordig staat de vormgeving in dienst van de consument die hebben wil. Daarmee draagt de vormgever in toenemende mate eraan bij dat consumenten vervreemden van de oorsprong van producten. Dit is het probleem waar ik me op wil richten: de verdwenen relatie tussen mens en materie. Als ontwerper probeer ik een bemiddelaar te zijn tussen deze twee.

Werkwijze ‘Visuele Etymologie’

Ik ben een criticus en onderzoeker van onze relatie met materiaal. Ik ben kritisch tegenover onze toe-eigening van materiaal omdat ik van mening ben dat we in principe alles te leen hebben. Daarnaast ben ik onderzoeker van spullen omdat die een reflectie van onszelf zijn. Spullen zijn spiegels van hun bezitters.

Mijn onderzoekswijze is vergelijkbaar met die van een etymoloog (onderzoeker die achterhaalt hoe een woord tot stand is gekomen). Het is de betekenis van spullen die ik wil ontrafelen: onderzoek, ontleden, antropologie, kunst, design, archeologie, fundamenteel.

Door spullen te ontleden wil ik de constructies onthullen die erachter zitten. Deze constructies reflecteren de  vanzelfsprekendheden en gewoontes van ons als gebruikers, net zoals de etymologie vanzelfsprekendheden in de taal aan het licht brengt. In mijn werk bevraag ik deze constructies en probeer ze uit te dagen door associaties en alternatieven te ontwerpen.

My background is Product Design, but products are rather my motive then my final stage. It fascinates me that we (human) appropriate us to the materials of the earth but at the same time because of industrialization and globalization more and more alienate from products.

Since industrialization the designer has his own hovel: he gives our stuff their shape. Before this, design was part of the work of the craftsman, who was technician and designer at the same time.

Nowadays design is in service of the consumer who wants to have. With that the designer contributes in the increasing alienation from the origin of products. This is the problem I focus on: The disappeared relation between human and matter. As designer I like to be a mediator between these two.

Working Method ‘Visual Etymology’

I am a critic and an investigator in our relation with material. I am critical towards our appropriation with material because of my opinion in the principle that we borrow everything. Beside this I am investigator of stuff because they are a reflection of ourselves. Stuff are mirrors from their owners.

My method of investigating is similar with that of an etymologist (investigator who discovers how a word is realized). It is the meaning of stuff I like to unravel: investigation, dissect, anthropology, art, design, archeology, fundamental.

By dissecting stuff I want to expose constructions behind it. These constructions reflect our reasonables and habits as users, like etymology brings reasonables of language to the surface. In my work I question these constructions en try to challenge them by designing associations and alternatives.
